Amy Adams and Marielle Heller's new film Night Bitch incorporates parenting experiences

Toronto, September 10, 2024. The day after the premiere of the film "Night Bitch," Amy Adams and Marielle Heller reflected on the film at a restaurant in Toronto. The film is directed by Heller and adapted from Rachel Yoder's best-selling book. It will be released by Searchlight Pictures on December 6.

In the film, Adams plays a "mother" whose husband is often away for work. The film shows the real state of being a new mother, including exhaustion, resentment, new fears and surreal plots. For Adams and Heller, this film hits the nail on the head and stems from their personal experiences. Heller wrote the script while raising her child. She created it during her husband's absence for television production, taking advantage of the time when her child took a nap and her eldest son watched TV.

After Adams read Yoder's book, she thought it presented a more honest perspective of motherhood. She recalled her struggles after the birth of her daughter, and Adams gave a performance without vanity in the film. Heller's favorite scenes come from passive-aggressive communication in relationships, especially the relationship between parents under the pressure of parenting. In the film, the image of fathers often appears useless, and many scenes may serve as a wake-up call for fathers.

Early on, Heller and Adams felt that they had touched on something, and there was a strong reaction from both the crew and the audience. "Night Bitch" will be released a few weeks after the US presidential election, when women's rights will be in the spotlight. Heller thinks this is a turbulent time for women. Although the film is not intentionally made into a radical feminist work, it involves topics such as women's bodies and positions in life. Adams starred in the film adaptation of "Hillbilly Elegy." She made "Night Bitch" for her daughter and is full of hope for her daughter's generation, looking forward to their participation in voting and attention to women's issues.
