Recently, the Australian government submitted a new social media platform regulation bill to parliament, triggering strong accusations from Elon Musk and a counterattack from the Australian prime minister.

It is understood that the bill stipulates that social media platforms that fail to prevent the spread of false information will be fined 5% of their global revenue. After the bill was proposed, Elon Musk, the owner of social media X, responded quickly on September 12 and accused the Australian government's move as "fascist" behavior. He believes that the bill is too harsh on social media platforms and restricts freedom of speech.

In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese firmly counterattacked on September 14. Albanese said that Elon Musk needs to realize that "social media has social responsibilities" and pointed out that if Musk doesn't understand this, then the word "fascist" is more appropriate to describe himself.

The Australian government emphasizes that the introduction of this bill is because misinformation and false information pose a serious threat to the safety, well-being and democracy, society and economy of Australians, and measures must be taken to deal with it. Since Elon Musk's X platform was acquired, most of its content moderation has been cancelled, resulting in an increase in "malicious and hateful" content on the platform.

In fact, this is not the first time Elon Musk has clashed with the government over social media regulation issues. Earlier this year, the Brazilian Supreme Court also launched an investigation into Elon Musk and X because the X platform did not handle relevant accounts as required, triggering a series of escalations of contradictions.

This dispute between Elon Musk and the Australian government once again pushes the issue of social media platform regulation to the forefront. The differences between the two sides highlight the complexity and challenges of seeking a balance between information dissemination and social responsibility, and also trigger extensive attention and in-depth thinking from the international community on social media regulation. In the future, how this controversy develops and whether it will have an impact on the global social media regulatory landscape is worthy of continuous attention.
