Recently, the Indonesian government has decided to suspend the construction of new hotels, villas, clubs and other projects in some areas of the tourist destination Bali. As a world-famous tourist destination, Bali has always been loved by tourists. However, the problem of overdevelopment is becoming increasingly serious, prompting the government to take this measure.

According to government data, as of last year, there were 541 hotels in Bali, an increase of 34 compared to 2019. In the first half of this year, about 2.9 million foreign tourists arrived in Bali by air, accounting for 65% of the total number of foreign tourists entering Indonesia by air. The influx of a large number of tourists and the continuous increase in the number of hotels have brought many problems to the local area, such as an increase in criminal activities, overexploitation of resources and disturbances to the lives of local residents. Previously, incidents involving improper behavior of foreign tourists in Bali were frequently exposed online, which aroused the dissatisfaction of local residents.

The acting governor of Bali Province has proposed to the central government last week to suspend the development of four areas in Bali to avoid overexploitation of local resources for commercial purposes. Senior officials of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia also said that the government has agreed to suspend relevant construction, but the specific suspension time is still under discussion. There are news that the period of the relevant construction ban may be as long as 10 years. The local government hopes that through this measure, it can protect Bali's local culture, improve the quality of local tourism, increase employment opportunities and truly revitalize the tourism industry. This decision has attracted widespread attention from the global tourism industry and will also have a profound impact on the future tourism development of Bali.
