As of September 15, 2024, French authorities said that early in the morning of that day, several people died in an unsuccessful attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France. At present, a rescue operation is underway, and the survivors of this tragedy have been taken to the gymnasium in the northern town of Ambleteuse.

Just two weeks ago, a ship carrying migrants broke down in the English Channel on its way from northern France to the United Kingdom, and dozens of people fell into the dangerous waterway, resulting in 13 deaths. On Saturday, the French coast guard and naval vessels rescued 200 people from the dangerous waters of the Strait of Calais, and 18 attempts by ships to leave France for the United Kingdom were observed. According to data from the International Organization for Migration, before Saturday's accident, at least 43 migrants have died or gone missing this year while attempting to cross to the United Kingdom. In July this year, four migrants died when their inflatable boat capsized and was punctured while crossing; in April, another five people (including a child) died during the crossing attempt; in January, a migrant ship was in distress in the dark and winter cold, and five bodies were found in the sea or washed up on the beach.
