South Korea issues typhoon preparatory warning

On August 19, the Jeju Local Meteorological Administration of South Korea reported that at 11 a.m. local time on the 19th, the center of Typhoon "Lark" No. 9 this year was located about 920 kilometers south of Jeju Island and was advancing northward at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour.

South Korea's meteorological department expects that the time when "Lark" is closest to Jeju Island is 17 to 18 o'clock local time on the 20th. The Jeju Local Meteorological Administration said that starting from the 20th, Jeju Island will gradually be affected by the typhoon or the tropical depression after the typhoon weakens. From the early morning of the 20th, Jeju Island will usher in strong winds and rainy weather. It is expected that from the afternoon of the 20th to the morning of the 21st, there may be heavy rainfall of more than 30 millimeters per hour on Jeju Island; from the afternoon of the 20th, Jeju Island will usher in strong winds of about 20 meters per second. From the evening of the 20th, the wind speed in the central mountainous area of Jeju Island will reach more than 25 meters per second.

In addition, South Korea's meteorological department has issued a typhoon preparatory warning. It is expected that from the early morning of the 20th in the far sea south of Jeju Island and from the morning of the 20th in the far sea south and the western offshore waters of Jeju Island, the wind speed will reach 10 to 16 meters per second and the waves will reach 2 to 4 meters. Jeju Island residents and tourists are reminded to pay special attention.

According to the forecast, Typhoon "Lark" will bring precipitation to most areas of South Korea, but it will not alleviate the continuous high temperature in the local area. Instead, it will increase the humidity and raise the perceived temperature. As of the morning of the 19th, Seoul has had 29 consecutive "tropical nights", setting a new record since records began in 1907. With the arrival of Typhoon "Lark", the hot weather at night will be more severe, and the record of "tropical nights" is expected to continue to be refreshed. "Tropical night" refers to a meteorological phenomenon in which the minimum temperature exceeds 25 degrees Celsius from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day.
