On August 19, 2024, Indian media reported that a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped on a bus. Five suspects including the bus driver were arrested. The incident occurred in Uttarakhand on the 12th.

The girl said that after she arrived in the state by bus, she was gang-raped by the bus driver, conductor and other bus drivers. Then the local Child Welfare Committee found her sitting alone at the bus station and called the police after asking her about the situation.

The report said that after the incident, the conductor involved also told others about his rape of the girl. At present, the police have sent the girl home and launched further investigations into the case.

Such violent crimes against women in India occur from time to time, attracting widespread attention and strong condemnation from all sectors of society. People have called for severe punishment for criminals. At the same time, they also hope that the government can take more effective measures to protect the safety and rights of women.

This is not the first time a similar incident has occurred in India. On April 30, 2015, a mother and daughter were sexually assaulted on a bus. The young girl was thrown off the bus and died. In December 2012, a 23-year-old female medical college student was gang-raped by six men on an off-duty bus in the capital New Delhi. She died of serious injuries. The incident triggered large-scale demonstrations across India, forcing the government to introduce relevant laws including the death penalty to severely punish sexual predators.
