Serial killer escapes in Kenya; police say there was internal assistance and eight people are suspended.

On August 20, a major jailbreak occurred at a prison in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Collins Jumacy Kalusha, a 33-year-old serial killer, and 12 prisoners successfully escaped. Kalusha was previously arrested on suspicion of killing 42 women including his wife.

The police said that around 5 am on August 20, when officers were conducting routine inspections and delivering breakfast to the cells, they discovered Kalusha and others had escaped. It is reported that the suspects cut through barbed wire and climbed over the wall with the assistance of internal personnel. These barbed wires are located in a closed courtyard in the prison where prisoners can move around. At present, the police are fully pursuing the escaped prisoners, and four prisoners who did not escape are assisting in the investigation.

This incident has led to the suspension of eight police officers involved. Five of them appeared in court for trial on August 21. The prosecutor asked the court to detain the police on duty during the jailbreak on August 20 for two weeks to complete the investigation.

Kalusha's serial murder case can be traced back to 2022. The first victim was his wife. He dismembered and dumped his wife's body. Then within two years, he caused the deaths of 41 more women. The most recent crime was on July 11 this year. The victims are between 18 and 30 years old. He lured them to the vicinity of a garbage dump to commit the crime. In some cases, he had sexual intercourse. When the police arrested Kalusha on July 15, they called him a "psychopathic serial killer with no humanity and contempt for life."

Many people questioned why the police did not discover the bodies earlier. The garbage dump where the bodies were dumped is only about 100 meters from the police station. At the same time, 42 people were killed within two years but the police were unaware. And the suspect was arrested less than three days after the bodies were discovered. Kenya's police watchdog has also launched an investigation to determine whether the police are involved in the murders.

In Kenya, suspects in major cases have escaped from prison twice in six months. In February this year, Kevin Kangethe, who was accused of murdering his girlfriend in the United States, escaped from prison and was captured a week later. At the beginning of August, a judge ordered his extradition back to the United States.
