The cholera epidemic in Sudan continues to spread and the death toll rises to 48

Recently, the cholera epidemic situation in Sudan is severe, which has aroused great concern from the international community. On August 27 local time, the Sudanese Ministry of Health said that the cholera epidemic in the country is continuously spreading. At present, 1223 cholera cases have been reported, among which 48 people have unfortunately died.

To deal with the epidemic, the Sudanese Ministry of Health has formulated an emergency response plan and taken a series of intervention measures, including setting up isolation centers in some states. At the same time, the Ministry of Health also plans to set up more isolation centers in Kassala State and Gedaref State in eastern Sudan and along the Nile River region to curb the further spread of the epidemic.

However, the relevant data previously reported by the World Health Organization is much more than that released by the Sudanese Ministry of Health. According to Reuters, WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris said on the 16th that 11,327 cholera cases have been reported in Sudan, including 316 deaths. And the WHO estimates that the actual number of infections and deaths will be even higher.

On April 15, 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces of Sudan erupted in an armed conflict in the capital Khartoum. The fighting then spread to other regions and has continued to this day. The World Health Organization previously said that the humanitarian crisis caused by the armed conflict in Sudan has exacerbated the spread of diseases such as cholera.

The international community is worried about the cholera epidemic in Sudan.
