At around 8 a.m. on August 29, 2024, Typhoon Shanshan made landfall near Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the maximum wind speed at landfall reached 216 kilometers per hour, and the maximum gust reached 252 kilometers per hour.

This typhoon has brought heavy rain and strong winds and has caused serious impacts. As of August 29, it has led to 3 deaths, 82 injuries, and 1 person missing. Among them, a landslide occurred in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture on the evening of the 27th, resulting in 3 deaths; a man in his 60s fell into the sea near Kagoshima Prefecture on the evening of the 28th and his whereabouts are still unknown.

Affected by the typhoon, communication failures and large-scale water and power outages have occurred in places such as Miyazaki Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture. Some Shinkansen lines have been suspended, and some flights have been canceled. Kyushu Electric Power Company said that more than 250,000 households in seven local prefectures were without power. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida convened a cabinet meeting to remind the public to remain vigilant and guard against heavy rain, landslides and floods.

The Japanese authorities had previously issued the highest-level “typhoon special warning” to Kagoshima Prefecture and ordered 2.25 million people to evacuate urgently. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled more than 600 flights in the coming days. Since Typhoon Shanshan may pass through the Japanese archipelago after turning north, Toyota has suspended operations at 14 factories across the country. The Japanese government has upgraded the information liaison room of the prime minister's official residence to the official residence response room and set up a specific disaster response headquarters.

At present, although Typhoon Shanshan has made landfall, its follow-up impacts are still ongoing. Relevant regions in Japan are making every effort to deal with various disasters brought by the typhoon and strive to restore normal production and living order. All sectors are also closely following the development of the disaster situation and the progress of rescue work.
