A helicopter crash occurs in Portugal, and four soldiers are unfortunately killed

On the afternoon of August 30, 2024 local time, in the Douro River in the northern Portuguese city of Lamego, a helicopter crashed. The accident caused the deaths of four soldiers and one person is missing.

According to local media reports, there were a total of six people on this helicopter, including one pilot and five members of the Portuguese National Guard. On that day, the helicopter participated in the forest fire fighting operation in the north and crashed around 12:50 on its return journey. Fortunately, the pilot was rescued by a passing ship and is currently under medical observation in the hospital and is not in life-threatening condition.

After the accident, Portuguese Prime Minister Montenegro went to the city of Lamego on the same day and delivered a speech expressing his condolences to the four soldiers who died. At the same time, he said that relevant departments will do their best to search and rescue the missing person. Lamplreia, the commander of the Douro Port Authority, revealed that the plane had broken into two pieces when it crashed. Rescuers found a total of four bodies inside and at the tail of the crashed plane. The rescue team, including two air force helicopters and dozens of maritime police, divers and first responders, is still conducting intense search and rescue work at the accident site and on the nearby riverbanks. In addition, the Portuguese government also announced that August 31 will be a national day of mourning.
