On September 1, 2024, Mexican President López released the last government work report of his term at the Zócalo, the central square of Mexico City. López was elected president in July 2018 and took office on December 1 of the same year. According to the Mexican constitution, the presidential term is six years. His term will end on September 30, 2024.

During his tenure, López implemented a series of policies and reforms. He is committed to combating corruption, streamlining government agencies, cutting official benefits, and using funds for social welfare projects such as subsidy programs for the elderly and helping single mothers. International organizations such as the World Bank have recognized that he lifted 9.5 million Mexicans out of poverty between 2018 and 2023. In terms of the economy, he actively promotes infrastructure construction, advocates energy independence, and strengthens the country's control over the oil and power industries. However, his economic policies are highly controversial and are accused of being populist and state interventionist. The cancellation of energy reforms has led to a reduction in foreign investment, and infrastructure construction projects are also questioned due to a lack of transparency and environmental assessments. In terms of security, although the strategy of "hugs not bullets" is adopted, the problem of violent crime in Mexico is still severe, the number of homicides remains high, and drug crimes and gang violence are rampant.

In the field of diplomacy, López actively develops relations with other countries, maintains good cooperation and exchanges with China, and conducts many cooperations during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, he criticizes some policies of the United States and expresses Mexico's stance on issues such as immigration.

In June 2024, the presidential candidate Ximbaum from the electoral alliance where the ruling National Regeneration Movement Party is located won the presidential election and will become the new president of Mexico. López's term has had an important impact on Mexico. Opinions on his governance performance vary from all sectors, but his policy measures have promoted the development and change of Mexico to a certain extent. In the future, Mexico's development under the leadership of the new president is closely watched by the international community.
