On September 3 local time, a boat carrying more than 100 illegal immigrants capsized in the English Channel, attracting widespread attention from the international community.

It is understood that this ship was attempting to travel from France to the United Kingdom via the English Channel at the time of the incident. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that there were approximately 70 illegal immigrants on board the ship, and only a few people had life jackets at the time of the incident. French officially operated merchant ships first discovered the capsizing of the ship, and then French naval helicopters, nearby fishing boats and military ships were successively put into rescue operations.

As of now, at least 12 people have been killed, about 50 people have been rescued, at least two people are in critical condition, and two people are still missing. Live video shows that numerous rescue vehicles are gathered near the port at the incident site, and a large number of rescue workers are helping survivors get out of trouble.

Darmanin pointed out that the United Kingdom should reach a consensus with the European Union on the issue of illegal immigrants. At present, most of the people who illegally immigrate to the United Kingdom are from Africa. They want to find jobs in the United Kingdom, but working conditions cannot be met in France. British government data shows that since the beginning of this year, 21,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in the United Kingdom from France across the English Channel, a slight increase compared with the same period in 2023, but lower than the number in the same period in 2022.

In recent years, boat capsizing incidents of illegal immigrants in the English Channel have occurred from time to time, often resulting in casualties or disappearances. This tragedy once again highlights the severity of the illegal immigration problem and the huge risks of illegal sea crossings. France and the United Kingdom will also continue to seek cooperation in cracking down on illegal immigration. How to effectively curb the tide of illegal immigration and ensure the safety of people's lives has become an urgent problem to be solved by the two countries and even the international community. The follow-up investigation and related measures are highly anticipated.
