On the afternoon of September 10 local time, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly officially opened at the United Nations headquarters in New York. On the morning of the same day, the 78th session of the General Assembly closed, and former Cameroonian prime minister Philémon Yang was sworn in as the president of the new session of the General Assembly.

The theme of this session of the General Assembly is "Seeking common ground while reserving differences to promote peace, sustainable development and human dignity for everyone around the world." The new president of the General Assembly, Philémon Yang, elaborated on his vision for his tenure at the first plenary session. He called on the international community to address a series of global challenges such as climate change, conflicts, poverty and inequality through multilateral cooperation. Philémon Yang emphasized that peace and security are top priorities and urged countries to resolve ongoing conflicts in areas such as the Gaza Strip, Haiti, Ukraine and the African Great Lakes region. At the same time, he said that fair economic growth should be promoted through innovation and a green economy to ensure that countries large and small can enjoy the fruits of economic development. He also mentioned that language diversity and gender equality will be given priority to ensure that all voices are heard and valued, and he promised to help African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island states overcome structural obstacles.

United Nations Secretary-General Guterres thanked the president of the 78th session of the General Assembly for his work in his speech, congratulated Philémon Yang on taking office, and praised his attention to a series of key priorities. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations is a place to seek multilateral solutions, and the General Assembly plays an irreplaceable role in advancing the process of achieving a peaceful and just future.

The general debate of this session of the General Assembly will start from September 24 and end on September 30. The Future Summit will be held from September 22 to 23. At that time, leaders from various countries will gather at the United Nations headquarters to jointly discuss responses to key global issues. The convening of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly provides an important platform for the international community to jointly address global challenges and promote world peace and development.
