Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori has died. He was once convicted for human rights violations

In the early stage, he achieved success in rectifying the economy and defeating rebellions. But in the later stage, he was imprisoned for excessive autocracy.

Fujimori defeated writer Mario Vargas Llosa and was elected president in 1990. This former university president and mathematics professor took over a country suffering from hyperinflation and guerrilla violence and repaired the economy and defeated the Shining Path rebels through bold actions. However, he later closed Congress and entered a controversial third term. In 2000, he fled the country due to a scandal and was later arrested and extradited back to Peru. He became the world's first former president to be tried and convicted in his own country for human rights violations and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

His daughter Keiko Fujimori has tried to restore the family dynasty by running for president. Fujimori died after a long battle with cancer. His presidency was controversial and was accused of autocracy. He left behind four children. Fujimori was born on Peru's Independence Day in 1938. His parents were once immigrant tailors. After obtaining multiple degrees, he became the president of the Lima Agricultural University and later ran for president. He implemented economic shock therapy and let the security forces combat rebellions. He was called a "Chinese" because of his Asian ancestry and often visited poor areas in a civilian style. But in the later stage, his desire for power expanded and he took anti-democratic measures, which drew criticism from human rights advocates at home and abroad. In 2017, the Peruvian Constitutional Court supported a humanitarian pardon for Fujimori. His last public appearance was leaving a private hospital on September 4.
