Tropical Storm Eliana forms in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico and approaches the Los Cabos resort area

On September 13, 2024, news from Miami. The National Hurricane Center announced that Tropical Storm Eliana took shape on Thursday in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico. Its predicted path shows that it will pass through or be close to the Los Cabos resort area at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula.

In an afternoon bulletin, the National Hurricane Center in Miami pointed out that the center of Eliana is about 240 miles southeast-south of Cabo San Lucas. The maximum sustained wind speed is 40 miles per hour and it is expected to strengthen within the next day. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for parts of the Baja California Peninsula, including Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Forecasters predict that as Eliana approaches, it will bring 4 to 6 inches of rain. Coastal areas of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco may receive up to 8 inches of rain early Friday.

It is predicted that Eliana will pass through Baja California Sur on Friday and enter the Gulf of California early Saturday. On Thursday, Tropical Storm Eliana is the only active tropical storm in the eastern Pacific Ocean monitored by the National Weather Service. Meanwhile, in the Atlantic Ocean, post-tropical cyclone Francine is bringing heavy rain to parts of the southern United States, and a tropical depression is moving over the open sea west of the Cape Verde Islands.
