Heavy Rain and Floods in Western Yemen Have Killed 57 People

Media reports on August 13, 2024 stated that according to the news released by the Yemen Flood Disaster Inspection Committee on the 17th, as of the evening of the 17th local time, the floods and mudslides and other natural disasters caused by the continuous heavy rain in Yemen have cumulatively killed 106 people and damaged 2,864 houses, of which 165 houses completely collapsed.

Previously, on August 8, it was comprehensively reported that the death toll from floods caused by heavy rain in western Yemen has risen to 45, with another 5 people missing and hundreds displaced. Agence France-Presse reported that according to statistics released by UN agencies and local officials on the 7th, the floods caused by heavy rain in Yemen in recent days have killed 45 people. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on the social media platform X that flash floods in Taiz Province in southwestern Yemen have killed 15 people. In addition, officials in Hodeidah Province said that local floods have killed 30 people, 5 are missing, and added that more than 500 people have been displaced.

It is reported that the rainy season in Yemen begins in late March each year, and rainfall intensifies from July to mid-August. Since late July this year, many areas in Yemen have suffered from heavy rain and floods. The western city of Hodeidah, the southwestern city of Taiz and the northwestern city of Hajjah in the country have been severely affected.

The long-term war has plunged Yemen into a humanitarian crisis, and this heavy rain and flood disaster has made the lives of the people even more difficult.
