On August 18, South Korea's largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, held a national congress, and Lee Jae-myung was successfully re-elected as the party leader with a high vote share of 85.4%.

Lee Jae-myung came from a poor background. He dropped out of middle school to work and his left hand was injured and disabled. Through his own efforts, he was admitted to the Law School of Chung-Ang University in South Korea. After becoming a human rights lawyer, he actively participated in civic movements. In 2010, he was elected mayor of Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, and later was elected governor of Gyeonggi Province. During the impeachment case of Park Geun-hye in 2016, Lee Jae-myung drew attention for taking the lead in calling for it. In the 2022 presidential election, he ran on behalf of the Democratic Party of Korea and narrowly lost to Yoon Suk Yeol, the candidate of the People Power Party.

Lee Jae-myung has a pragmatic and tough political style. In terms of diplomacy, he emphasizes autonomy and balance and is regarded as "the successor of Moon Jae-in". However, in recent years, he has faced accusations of multiple charges such as corruption, malfeasance, and bribery, and has also been affected by scandals involving his family. From August to September 2023, Lee Jae-myung went on a hunger strike for 24 days to protest against the governance of President Yoon Suk Yeol and suspended his duties due to health problems. On January 2, 2024, he was attacked in Busan and his neck was stabbed.

With this re-election as the party leader, Lee Jae-myung is regarded as a popular candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea to compete in the 2027 South Korean presidential election. His performance in the South Korean political arena in the future is highly anticipated.
