At 3:10 on August 18, the China Earthquake Networks Center officially determined that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in the far sea off the east coast of Kamchatka (52.80 degrees north latitude, 160.15 degrees east longitude), with a focal depth of 50 kilometers.

There were obvious tremors in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky near the epicenter. Currently, there are no reports of casualties or damaged buildings.

The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences revealed that shortly before this earthquake, the Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula began to erupt, and the height of the volcanic ash was nearly 9 kilometers.

There is a large and medium-sized city within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, namely Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which is about 104 kilometers from the epicenter. The average altitude within 5 kilometers of the epicenter is about -658 meters.

It is worth mentioning that the United States Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Network initially reported the magnitude of this earthquake as 7.4, and later revised it to 7.0. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations did not issue a tsunami warning due to this earthquake.
