A hostage-taking incident by prisoners in a Russian correctional institution has led to 1 death and 4 injuries

On August 23 local time, during a disciplinary committee meeting at the federal IK-19 maximum-security correctional institution for serious offenders in Volgograd Oblast, Russia, prisoners took correctional institution staff hostage.

The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service confirmed that one prison administrator has died in the incident and measures are currently being taken to rescue the hostages. The governor of Volgograd Oblast said that the four injured prison administrators in the incident are receiving treatment in hospitals.

The Russian Federal Investigative Committee released news that a criminal case has been opened and an investigation has been launched into the incident.
