Violence erupts at the Notting Hill Carnival in the UK, with many injured and arrested

Recently, one of the oldest street parties in the UK - the Notting Hill Carnival was held in west London. However, this event that should have been full of joy and celebration was overshadowed by violence.

On August 25, three people had already been stabbed at the carnival, including a 32-year-old woman with a child attending the festival. The woman is currently in critical condition. The police arrested 103 people on charges of violence, robbery and possession of offensive weapons on that day.

On August 26, on the closing day of the carnival, the situation was even more severe. More than one million people were expected to attend the event, but a small number of people took the opportunity to commit crimes, including violence. Another five people were stabbed on that day, and two of the victims were in critical condition. As of 22:50 that night, there had been five knife attacks, and the police had also seized three guns. At the same time, a total of 230 people were arrested.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Adelekan of the Metropolitan Police expressed his distress over this. He said that the carnival should have been a "family day", but it was destroyed by unacceptable violence. He is tired of such situations occurring every year, both tired of telling families that their relatives are seriously injured or worse, and tired of witnessing crime scenes at the carnival.

During the previous two carnivals, one person was killed, 14 people were stabbed, more than 125 police officers were attacked, and about 500 people were arrested.

To maintain order, this year the police said they would "deploy a large number of police officers". About 7,000 police officers were on duty during the weekend activities. But violent incidents still keep occurring. Adelekan called on those with information to come forward and provide clues to prevent further violent incidents. The violence at the Notting Hill Carnival has triggered profound reflections from all sectors of society on public safety and the management of large-scale events.
