The capital of North Darfur state in Sudan is attacked, resulting in 25 deaths

On August 27, government officials in North Darfur state, Sudan revealed that the state capital, El Fasher, was shelled by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces on the 26th.

According to a statement by Ibrahim Abdullah Khatir, the minister of health of North Darfur state, the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces shelled El Fasher for about four hours on the evening of the 26th. Four shells fell on a market in the Abu Shouk refugee camp in the northern part of the city, killing 25 people and injuring about 30. The injured have been sent to nearby health centers and hospitals for treatment. At the same time, the El Fasher Resistance Committee, a local organization in Sudan, posted on social media that a college in the west of El Fasher was severely damaged in the shelling.

Since May 10 this year, the Sudanese Armed Forces, in conjunction with local armed forces, have been engaged in fierce battles with the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher for the control of North Darfur state, resulting in a large number of civilian casualties. At present, the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces have controlled four other states in the western Darfur region except North Darfur state.

On April 15, 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces erupted in an armed conflict in the capital Khartoum. The fighting then spread to other regions. The continuous conflict has caused about 18,800 deaths in Sudan and more than 10.17 million people to be displaced. This attack on the capital of North Darfur state has once again aroused great concern from the international community about the situation in Sudan. All parties have called on the parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint, avoid more civilian casualties, and resolve disputes through peaceful negotiations as soon as possible to restore local peace and stability.
