On August 8, 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that in view of the expulsion of Brazilian Ambassador to Nicaragua, Da Costa, by the Nicaraguan side, based on the principle of reciprocity, the Brazilian government decided to expel Nicaraguan Ambassador to Brazil, Matu. This decision was made by Brazilian President Lula after a meeting with Foreign Minister Vieira on the morning of the same day. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Da Costa left Nicaragua on August 8. The Nicaraguan Embassy in Brazil told the media on August 8 that Matu left Brazil in the early hours of the same day.

According to Brazilian media reports, the Brazilian government did not send representatives to attend the 45th anniversary celebration of the Sandinista Revolution held in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, on July 19, and relations between the two countries began to deteriorate. According to Nicaraguan media reports, the expulsion of the Brazilian ambassador by the Nicaraguan side was a response to Brazil's absence from the celebration.

Previously, Brazilian President Lula had said that Brazil hopes to maintain good diplomatic relations with Nicaragua and will continue to have dialogues with the Nicaraguan government to resolve differences between the two countries.
