On September 2 local time, a court in Venezuela that is specifically responsible for trying terrorism-related crimes issued an arrest warrant for Edmundo González, a candidate of the opposition alliance "Democratic Unity Roundtable" who previously participated in the presidential election.

González is accused of multiple charges including abuse of power, usurpation of office, forgery of public documents, incitement to illegal activities, and rebellion. Previously, the Venezuelan prosecution launched an investigation into the election dispute and summoned González three times, but he ignored them all.

Venezuela held a presidential election on July 28. The Venezuelan National Electoral Council announced early the next morning that the current president Maduro was re-elected. The opposition questioned the election results and its supporters took to the streets to protest.

González, 75 years old, has served as Venezuela's ambassador to Argentina and Algeria. In this incident, less than an hour after the Venezuelan prosecution applied for an arrest warrant, the court quickly issued an arrest warrant.

It is worth noting that on the same day that the Venezuelan judicial authorities issued an arrest warrant for González, the United States seized a plane in the Dominican Republic that Venezuelan President Maduro often uses, claiming that its acquisition method violated US sanctions regulations and involved other criminal issues. This move has aroused strong condemnation from the Venezuelan government.

This arrest warrant incident in Venezuela has attracted widespread attention from the international community. All parties are closely watching the development of the situation in Venezuela and the possible impact of this incident on the regional political landscape. The international community generally hopes that Venezuela can resolve domestic political differences through peaceful and legal means and maintain national stability and development.
