According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, two earthquakes struck successively in the eastern waters of the Philippines on the morning of September 4. The tremors were clearly felt in Manila.

The first earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 occurred at 7:16 local time. The epicenter was located in the sea about 42 kilometers northeast of Homonhon Island in Quezon Province. The focal depth was 2 kilometers. Quezon Province and Camarines Norte Province felt strong tremors. Quezon City in the capital Metro Manila also had a slight tremor. Then, at 7:55, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck again in the sea about 38 kilometers northeast of Homonhon Island. The focal depth was 1 kilometer. This earthquake made Quezon City and Makati City in Metro Manila both feel obvious tremors. Residents could feel shaking that lasted for several seconds indoors.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology calls this situation a "double earthquake", which usually occurs in areas with complex faults. That is, two earthquakes of similar intensity occur successively in the same area and there is no direct triggering relationship between them. The institute said that both earthquakes are tectonic earthquakes. The magnitude 5.3 earthquake may trigger aftershocks, but it is expected that this double earthquake will not cause losses.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific Rim volcanic and seismic belt and earthquakes occur frequently. The successive occurrence of two earthquakes in the eastern waters this time has aroused the attention and concern of the local people. Relevant departments are also continuously paying attention to the follow-up situation to ensure the safety of people's lives and property and social stability. The international community also keeps an eye on the earthquake situation in the Philippines.
